Becoming a bridge and industrial painter with Local 6 changed Yianni Smallis’ life. Before joining the union, he worked at the airport and at FedEx, doing strenuous work for long hours while earning low wages. As a union painter, Yianni earns enough to not just survive, but thrive, and works a more normal schedule that allows him to enjoy his life.
Because of his new career, Yianni was able to get engaged and married in Greece, and build a better life for him and his spouse. He’s also been able to travel and see new places while on the job; he recently visited Seattle this summer.
Yianni tells pre-apprentices and anyone looking to get into the trades, “This can really change your life. The work is tough, but if you show up and work hard, you’ll go far.”
